For the first time since 1939 racing returned to the North West 200 in Northern Ireland. At that time the Portrush – Portstewart – Coleraine triangle ran to 11 gruelling miles.

As has so often been the case the weather throughout the history of the North West played its part with downpours during most of the afternoon reducing speeds and decimating the entry, with only half finishing the race.
